Texas Physicians Endorse Rep. Byron Cook for Reelection to Texas House District 8
AUSTIN - TEXPAC, the political advocacy arm of the Texas Medical Association (TMA), has endorsed Rep. Byron Cook for reelection to Texas House District 8. TMA is Texas' largest physician organization. "Chairman Cook is a powerful champion in the Texas Legislature for patients and their physicians," said Manuel Acosta, MD, chair of the TMA Political Action Committee (TEXPAC) Board of Directors. "He is a strong and consistent advocate of the historic medical liability reforms enacted by the Texas Legislature in 2003. The reforms have served to help sick and injured Texans to have more physicians who are more willing and able to give them the medical care they need." During the 2007 Legislative session, Representative Cook effectively chaired the House Civil Practices Committee. He also helped to pass legislation that improved the health of Texas patients. His efforts resulted in additional funding and an improved administration of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and greater access for patients to important health care information. "We look forward to working with Chairman Cook again to improve the health care of all Texans," added Dr. Acosta. TEXPAC speaks on behalf of more than 43,000 Texas physicians and medical students, and nearly 8,000 alliance members. Organized in 1962, TEXPAC is one of the oldest political action committees in Texas. TEXPAC also is one of the largest bipartisan PACs in the state and ranks first in size among other state medical association PACs. - 30 - |
