Texas Physicians Provide Political Prescription For Health Care Champions

Endorsement Videos Tell Patients Why Candidates Deserve Support

An endorsement from Texas physicians has always meant more to a candidate than the promise of campaign cash. In addition to the community prestige of support from a group of trusted professionals, endorsed candidates can often count on strong grassroots support from physicians and their spouses – handing out campaign materials in their offices or showing up to stuff envelopes and work the phones.

Now Texas’ two largest physician political action committees are providing selected endorsed candidates a new kind of cutting edge grassroots support – Internet videos that tell patients exactly why the doctors are part of their campaign. “Now, perhaps more than ever before, Texas needs experienced leaders in the Texas Legislature who have a proven record of fighting for our patients,” said Dr. Lloyd Van Winkle, Chair, TAFPPAC. “We’re committed to providing our endorsed candidates the tools to reach the voters of Texas directly.”

TAFPPAC and TEXPAC have so far produced and distributed Internet endorsement videos for State Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) and State Reps. Vicki Truitt (R-Keller), Dawnna Dukes (D-Austin), Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth), Betty Brown (R-Terrell), Garnet Coleman (D-Houston) and Corbin Van Arsdale (R-Tomball).

“The political calculus of many campaigns for the Texas Legislature has changed,” said Dr. Manuel Acosta, Chair, TEXPAC Board of Directors. “Physicians’ PACs can’t compete in pure dollars with those who are prepared to pour $1 million into a campaign, but these videos allow us to extend the value of our endorsements in ways that matter the most – reaching the voters.”
