Contributions to Texas Medical Association PAC (TEXPAC) and American Medical Association PAC (AMPAC) are not deductible as charitable contributions or business expenses for federal income tax purposes.  Voluntary political contributions to TEXPAC may be shared with AMPAC.  Contributions are not limited to the suggested amount.  Neither TMA nor AMA will favor or disadvantage anyone based on the amounts or failure to make contributions.  Contributions to TEXPAC and AMPAC are subject to Federal Election Commission regulations.

The next legislature will confront: A multibillion dollar shortfall in health care services alone;Tough, enforceable prompt payment legislation and other fair managed care practice reforms; Tough, enforceable sanctions against lawsuit abuse; and Extending the corporate franchise tax to medical practices.

2. Two statewide offices crucial to medicine will have new faces — attorney general and lieutenant governor.

3. Because of legislative reapportionment,the next legislature will have massive turnover and new, inexperienced first-term legislators. The time to help elect patient-friendly officials is right now.

4. Because of retirements and resignations, a majority of the state Supreme Court seats will be up for elections. Medicine's hard-fought victories to restore judicial fairness will hang in the balance.

5. Next spring and fall, voters will elect the entire 2003 legislature, almost every statewide elected official, and the entire federal delegation. 6. Big business is mounting a smear campaign against medicine, accusing doctors of widespread medical errors and fraudulent billing.

7. We are called the most effective medical organization in the country. Just ask the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Medical Economics, LA Times. Shall we go on?

8. There is strength in numbers (duh).

9. With the stroke of a pen (or a crayon, it seems sometimes), the legislature can turn an optometrist into a surgeon.
